Vietnam's middle income trap: current status and a way out

Abstract

    This paper offered an overview ofthe middle income trap. It was argued that Vietnam's middleincome trap is already wilh its five symptoms clearly visible in the last several years including (i)growth slowdown, (ii) lackluster productivity performance, (iii) lack of structural transformationin the tme sense, (iv) no rising trend in competitiveness ranking, and (v) emergence of growthcausedproblems. Vietnam must not only provide scientific evidence of a middle income trap butalso take a decisive policy action to overcome this problem. To do that, Vietnam needs a newgrowth model to avoid the middle income trap and continue to develop into high income countryin the future To move from quantity-based growth to quality-based one. concrete suggestionshave been offered. Among them are a productivity focus and FDI-linked technology transfer
