THE PICTURE OF THE DIALECTS IN THANH HOA'S GEOGRAPHICAL NAMES

Abstract

Formation of any geographical name (place name) is strongly influenced by the historical, cultural and linguistic characteristics of the place it belongs to and thus, can reveal valuable information of those characteristics. The formation of the geographical names in Thanh Hoa are not an exception. Characteristics of a dialect transition zone are clearly shown in many aspects of geographical names in Thanh Hoa, such as the language origin, phonetic characteristics, vocabulary features,… Accordingly, Thanh Hoa geographical names have created a vivid picture of Thanh Hoa dialects.
