STRATEGIES FOR TRANSLATING UTTERENCES WITH CONVENTIONAL IMPLICATURE FROM ENGLISH INTO VIETNAMESE

Abstract

Conventional  implicature  is  implicit  meaning conveyed by  means of  linguistic forms  such  as  conjunctions,  connotational  particles,  special  structures,  etc.  However,  this system  is  different  from  language  to  language.  Such  difference  between  English  and Vietnamese  requires  the  translator’s  creativeness  when  applying  translation  theories  to the translating  in  order  to  have  the  right  choice  of  linguistic  forms  to  obtain  the  necessary equivalence  between  the  source  and  the  target  language.   This  research  indicates  that  the translators  use  three  main  strategies  when  translating  utterances  with  conventional implicature  from  English  to  Vietnamese,  which  are:  translations  with  conserved Conventional Implicature, translation with adapted Conventional Implicature and translation with Conventional Implicature obmitted.
