Abstract

In recent decades, language researchers have been interested in describing and analysing natural characteristics, practical applications of languages through data of actual communication. Data used for illustration in much language research are no longer examples of researchers’ intuition but relied on authentic sources of natural wording through corpora. Corpus linguistics has become one of the popular approaches in much current research on English discourse. Through corpus-based analysis, this paper explains aspects of modality meaning in the deontic sense of Must Obligation in English, with discussions of mitigation devices for the sense of obligation through the research corpora built from speeches made by British and American Ambassadors to Vietnam. Besides, withcorpus-based analysis, this paper aims at the accuracy and reliability of authentic data in investigating a particular issue in English discourse analysis.
