Abstract

This article adopted the iconicity theory of cognitive linguistics to deeply explore the universality of morphological reduplication in Imguistic typology. Under carefiil examination wifli typological tools, it is found that morphological reduplication usually forms onomatopoeic reduplications and manner imitative reduplications. By repeating tiie sound of the syllables, reduplicative words imitate the sound and manners in the real world, which make the sound of the words vivid and colorflil. Therefore, it indicates that not all morphological reduplications are created randomly, on the contrary, they are created based on the iconicity of form and content, sound and meaning.
