Some errors in using article in English academic writing by Vietnamese learners

Abstract

    This article emphasizes some common problems encounteied by Vietnamese learners with article usage in English academic writing. We collected 96 master theses fiom postgraduate students at University of Languages and International Studies, Vietnam National University (VNLI) to analyze some errors related to English article usage. The results show that the postgraduate students have a variety of errors in English article usage due to the effect of their mother tongue. It is expected that understanding linguistic differences in terms of the definiteness and indefiniteness m nouns between students' mother tongue (LI) and English may help the learners to reduce interference fiom their first language.
