Abstract

At the contact areas on working surfaces of machine parts that have relative
motions, friction and wear are generally generated. One of the most important
factors affecting the friction and wear properties of the material is surface
hardness. In this work, pairs of specimen made of S45C steel with different
surface hardness were fabricated and investigated for their effect to friction and
wear properties of the steel surfaces at un-lubricated condition. Experimental
results indicated that the surface hardness strongly affected friction coefficient
and wear of the S45C steel, and could be used as reference documents for
engineers in designing machine parts made from S45C steel.
