Abstract

Nghe An is a province with large-scale shrimp farming in the country.
However, a large amount of sludge from shrimp ponds in Nghe An province is
annually siphoned into the canals and unprocessed, causing loss of landscapes,
odors, environmental pollution and waste of resources. Results of physical and
biological indicator analysis of 81 sludge samples from 5 typical districts in Nghe
An showed that the sludge had neutral to alkalinity pH (7.4 - 7.8), low to
medium salinity (1.28 - 4.19‰), rich in organic matter (11.1 - 23.2% C), total
nitrogen (0.6 - 0.8%) and useful phosphorus (693-11455ppm P2O5), no signs of
heavy metal contamination (Pb, Cd, As and Hg) and no infection with bacteria
Samonella. In general, the quality of sludge discharged from Nghe An shrimpraising ponds shows potential and applicable for composting process
contributing to deal with the waste sludge disposal and to overcome the
problem of environmental pollution in the Nghe An shrimp raising households.
