Literature Review on William Faulkner Studies – Development and Trends

Abstract

This article, at starting point, aims to draw an outline of Faulkner criticism in international researches. Scholarship trends as well as the historical development of Faulkner studies are recorded and generalized. The overview of Faulkner worldwide studies also contributes to evaluate the reception of Faulkner in Vietnam. Noticeably, the interdisciplinary approach, especially cultural study, rather than “close reading” approach, is now prominent in worldwide scholarship. Meanwhile, this approach is still limited in Vietnam, and it is reasonable to expect more work along this line. This study not only provides Vietnamese scholars with reference materials about Faulkner but also offers a brief speculation on where Faulkner scholarship are going to be in the future in Vietnam.
