Abstract
This study was conducted to establish the scientific basis of the specific morphology and quality of custand apple fruit in Chi Lang and Huu Lung districts, Lang Son province for applying geographical indication registration. The study results show that, Lang Son custard apple has the common characteristics of being large in weight (average 324.8 gram/fruit) and relatively round fruit. A ripe custard apple is light green color covered with white powder, the eyelids are colored light pink. The percentage of edible portions of Lang Son custard apple is high (accounting for 53.1%), the number of seeds per fruit is low (average 67.8 seeds/fruit). In addition, the quality of Lang Son custard apple fruit has further confirmed the brand, with sugar percentage is 14.7% and Brix is 15.69 degrees. Other substances in the composition of custard apple fruit such as total acid content, vitamin C and B6, magnesium, iron, total polyphenols also create specific characteristics of Lang Son custard apple fruit. The typical morphology and quality of Lang Son custard apple are related to the climatic and soil conditions of the locality, and farmer’s techniques. The average fruit weight, edible portion percentage, average number of seeds, sugar percentage and Brix are indicators influenced by soil composition.
