Assess changes of river bank erosion the vicinity of Vam Nao

Abstract

Bank erosion has been affecting dozens of people along riverbank. Therefore, research about channel adjustment and bank erosion are very essential. With the advent of advanced remote sensing (RS) technology and GIS (geographic information system) we are able to carry out monitoring and assessing accurately channel adjustment and bank erosion in 2 aspects: horizon and depth. The results indicated that the changing of bank erosion and accretion occured in a relatively clear tendency. The studied area has tended toward less erosion for the last 10 years. However, river topography’s changes are fairly complex. In general, hydraulic factors, flow discharge, vulnerable geologic structure, characteristics of river topography and cross profile as well as human activities are mainly responsible for this situation.
