Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the outcomes of an intervention to improve nurses’ health education at 108 Military Central Hospital from the inpatients’ perspective.

Methods: Interventional study design with pre- and post-intervention evaluation. The health education capacity of nurses was assessed from the patients’ perspective. A total of 106 patients before the intervention and 106 patients after the intervention (one month later) were selected from 10 clinical departments of the hospital. The measurement scale consisted of 32 questions categorized into two domains—
skills and attitude—and demonstrated good reliability, with Cronbach’s alpha ranging from 0.70 to 0.92.

Results: The intervention program to improve nurses’ health education capacity was developed based on the 6-step Quality Intervention Design (6SquID), including theoretical
and practical training, development of health education protocols, application of digital technology-supported videos, guidance, inspection, and supervision. Post-intervention, nurses’ health education capacity improved signifcantly: the proportion of patients rating nurses’
health education capacity as above average increased from 65% to 87.7% (p<0.01), and the average score for nurses’ health education capacity, as evaluated by patients, increased from 133.74 ± 17.98 to 145.71 ± 15.08.

Conclusion: The evaluation from the patients’ perspective shows that the intervention program effectively enhanced nurses’ health education capacity. It should be maintained, expanded, and applied to other departments within the hospital as well as across the military health system to enhance comprehensive, patient-centered care quality.
