The difficulties and the role of social workers in supporting migrant workers to access health services in Eahdil village, Dak Lak province

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to describe the difficulties that revent migrant workers in accessing health services; and analyzing the role of social workers in supporting migrant workers at Eahdil village, Dak-Lak province. Methods: Through semi-structured interviews with 30 migrant workers, two sessions of group discussions with migrant workers’ representatives from Northern Mountains, Red River, North Central, South Central and Mekong Delta, local records. The study was conducted in Eahdil village, Dak Lak province, from January to April 2015. Main findings: The study identified four factors; socio-economic, socio-political, socio-cultural and environmental conditions are barriers to migrant workers in access to health services; In addition, the research analyzed the role of social work in supporting migrant workers through the following activities: communication - awareness raising, psychological support, policy procedure support and resources linkage. Conclusions: Understand the difficulties that prevent migrant workers from accessing health services and the need for social workers in the field of public health. It is recommended that state agencies should lighten up the temporary residence registration system, and create employment programs, policies in favor migrant workers, so that they can easily access to local health services. In the commune (ward), professional social workers are needed.
