Socio-economic impacts on families and labor exporters in Dong Thap after returning to the locality for the period 2018-2020

Abstract

Labor export is an activity that greatly contributes to the economic development of Vietnam. However, when returning to the locality, employees and their families have to bear many socio-economic impacts. A cross-sectional study was carried out on 210 families with 916 members of employees going to work abroad, in order to: (1) describe the living conditions of the family of the migrant worker and (2) evaluate the economic and social impacts on employees returning to their localities after working abroad for a defnite time. Research results show that employees contribute a lot to the family (54.7%). And the supports are used to help relatives (89%), daily expenses (77.1%), debt repayment (60.5%), shopping for furniture (51.4%) and sending savings (41.9%). Employees still regularly contact family members (99.5%) by phone (97.1%) to discuss issues: Health care (99.5%), information about work employment/production (73.9%) and education (70.5%). Households have almost no problems while the expatriate is abroad. The households all have good living conditions and all have the necessary items for life. Workers who go to work abroad have contributed a lot to their families. Health care; Information about work/production and education are issues frequently discussed by expatriates with their families.
