Abstract

Publications of the lepidopterous stem borers of sugarcane in Vietnam have been reviewed. To date,

according to the known published data related to stem borers of sugarcane, a total of 18 species lepidopterous

stem borers have been recorded in Vietnam with three species have been identified only to genus name. They

belong to six genera under four families of order Lepidoptera. The recorded species of stem borers were

concentrated in family of Crambidae (10 species) and Noctuidae (6 species). Each of the remaining families

(Cossidae, Tortricidae) has only one species. This paper also presents a discussion about the validity of the

recorded lepidopterous stem borers of sugarcane in Vietnam. The discussion showed that only 9 species

published by researchers were real stem borers feeding sugarcane in Vietnam. They are Chilo auricilius

Dudgeon, C. infuscatellus Snellen, C. sacchariphagus Bojer, C. tumidicostalis Hampson, Scirpophaga excerptalis

(Walker), Sesamia inferens (Walker), Sesamia sp., Tetramoera schistaceana (Snellen), and Phragmataecia

castaneae (Hübner).
