Keywords
Abstract
The Ta Van Phung uprising was the most extensive and longest-lasting in the North under the Tu Duc reign. The reason it was able to exist and operate for long time in a sizeable geographical area for many years was that this uprising exploited the weaknesses in the ruling policy of the Nguyen court. At the same time, the insurgency could gather a strong force that included Vietnamese, Chinese, Vietnamese Catholics and foreign missionaries. Based on exploiting many historical sources, the article analyzes and clarifies some characteristics of the Ta Van Phung uprising and its impacts on the Nguyen policies under Tu Duc reign.
