Abstract
This article outlines the development of the Institute of History’s international cooperation over the seventy-year period from 1953 to 2023, identifying it as an important factor in enhancing research quality, professional training, and the standing of Vietnamese historiography. Between 1953 and 1975, the Institute focused on expanding relations with socialist countries while mobilising support from the international community of historians for Vietnam’s resistance struggle through academic exchanges, conferences, training activities, and formal cooperation programmes. After 1975, and especially following the initiation of the national renovation process, international cooperation broadened considerably in terms of partners, subject matter, and forms of engagement, involving scholars, universities, research institutes, and international organisations from Europe, Asia, and North America. Numerous joint research projects, academic conferences, training programmes, scholar exchanges, and international publications were undertaken, helping to strengthen the professional capacity of the Institute’s researchers, promote Vietnamese history internationally, and deepen the integration of Vietnamese historiography into the global scholarly community.
