Abstract

The Northern Central Highlands Campaign of 1972 constituted a key axis of advance within the strategic Spring–Summer Offensive of 1972 conducted by our people and army forces. Under the command of the Campaign High Command, and on the basis of correctly identifying the main direction of attack at Đắk Tô-Tân Cảnh, the forces effectively coordinated combined arms operations, employing tactics of encirclement in conjunction with breakthrough assaults to rapidly destroy a critical defensive complex, thereby shaking the enemy’s defensive system in the Northern Central Highlands. However, during the offensive against Kon Tum, due to limitations in logistical support, coordination, and the timely exploitation of opportunities, the objective of liberating the town was not achieved. Nevertheless, the campaign secured a strategically significant victory, contributing to the attrition of enemy forces, the expansion of liberated areas, and the transformation of the military situation in the southern battlefield. At the same time, it yielded important lessons regarding command organization, the selection of operational directions, the employment of forces, and the art of campaign-level warfare.
