Abstract
This study was conducted to assess the current status and propose solutions for household solid waste management in Chau Phu commune, An Giang province. Research methods included interviews with management officials and households, combined with field surveys to collect data, thereby evaluating the current situation and proposing appropriate management solutions. Collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and one-way analysis of variance. The results estimated the household solid waste generation rate to be 0.41 kg/person/day, equivalent to a total generation of approximately 36,888 tons/year for the entire commune. Regarding composition, easily decomposable organic waste accounted for the highest proportion (66.52 %), followed by plastic waste (6.54 %), waste paper (4.16 %), nylon (2.67 %), metal waste (4.64 %), glass waste (1.33 %), textiles (3.21 %), rubber (0.3 %), and other types of municipal solid waste (9.86 %). Currently, the rate of at-source solid waste classification is 63 %; however, this classification is mostly not in accordance with the guidance of specialized agencies. The collection rate of municipal solid waste across the commune only reached 76.1 %. Household waste management practices include burning (17 %), dumping into rivers (12 %), and landfilling (3 %), with the remainder being sent to collection points. The study indicates that the classification and collection of municipal solid waste still have many limitations, mainly due to a lack of guidance, inspection, supervision, as well as limitations in means and funding for implementation. These results provide an important reference basis for improving local municipal solid waste management.
