Abstract
The study investigated the current status of household hazardous solid waste management in Lich Hoi Thuong and Tran De communes, Can Tho city by interviewing 60 people collecting waste samples from 20 households to determine the amount and composition of hazardous solid waste. The results revealed that the amount of household hazardous solid waste was 6.9 g/person/day. A total of eleven types were identified, of which motorcycle oil bottles (20 %), cleaning cloths contaminated with oil (16.7 %) and nail polish bottles (16.6 %) accounted for the most significant proportion. Regarding people's awareness, the results of the awareness survey of households at the study locations presented that, out of a total of 60 people interviewed, 68 % of people were unaware of the concept of household hazardous solid waste and its harmful effects. In terms of local management, hazardous solid waste was not collected separately and was often reclassified as regular household solid waste after collection. Therefore, there was a need for solutions to disseminate and train on the reduction, classification, and management of hazardous solid waste at the source, during collection, transportation, and treatment, in accordance with the provisions of Law.
