FAMILY CAREGIVERS’ KNOWLEDGE AND PRACTICE OF INJURY PREVENTION FOR CHILDREN UNDER 5 YEARS IN LOC HOA WARD, NAM DINH CITY

Abstract

Objective: To describe the knowledge and practice of injury prevention for children under 5 years amongfamily caregivers in Loc Hoa ward Nam Dinh city in 2019. Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 120 family caregivers who did taking directly care for children under 5 years at home from January of 2019 to December of 2019, based on population surveys, applying sample size calculation formula, randomly selected primary childcare workers are eligible for permanent residence in the area. Results: The knowledge of the prevention with sharp objects was 69.2%, choking prevention was 37.5%, being fallen prevention was 22.5%, and burning prevention was 15.0%. The knowledge of first-aid practice in order to know fatal injuries was 65.8%, 46.7% gained first-aid purposes, 48.3% had knowledge of the first-aid for open wounds, 47.5% understood their first-aid for fractures. Equipment practice for a safe house with drowning prevention rate was (83.3%), falling prevention rate was 80.0%, poisoning prevention reached 71.7%, and prevention of animal/ animal bites achieved (52.5%). Conclusion: The situation of caregivers’ knowledge and practice of injury prevention for children under 5 years old is not good.
