Abstract

Objective: To evaluate results of comprehensive care of preterm and low birth babies with Kangaroo comprehensive care method (KMC) and analyze some weaknesses related to results. Method: The retrospective descriptive study was conducted at the Neonatology Department of Vinmec Times City International Hospital from January 2019 to 6/2020 with 86 newborns cared for KMC and 86 people perform Kangaroo holistic care. Results: 33.7% of children received KMC in the first 24 hours after birth; from 24 - 48 hours is 20.9% and over 72 hours is 36%. The average number of days KMC was 16.62 ± 10.28 days. Average weight gain was 21.56 ± 11.1 g/kg/day, of which 55.8% of them gained good weight (> 18 grams/kg /day) and 38.1% increased average weight (15-18g/kg/day). 98.8% of newborn increased in length at a good rate (≥ 0.6 cm / week). The amount of infant milk eaten increased gradually (from 91.2 ± 57.8 ml in the firt days to until discharge was 376.4 ± 117.7ml/day). Overall results of KMC: good level at 88.4% and 11, 6% not good yet. Three factors that make good KMC results are all from the person performing MI, that is: the child is breastfed (OR = 4.02;95% CI: 0,38-42,95 and p <0.05), the mother is the person performing KMC (OR = 9,26; 95% CI: 1,46-58,67 and p <0.05) and have good functional skills (OR = 21.91; 95%CI: 1,26-467,9 and p <0.05). Conclusion: KMC helps premature, underweight babies to stabilize body temperature, breathing rate, and digestive symptoms; Children receive milk well and gain weight, increase length. The result will be better if the caregiver of KMC is their mother; she has good KMC skills and the baby is breastfed.
