SELF-CARE KNOWLEDGE AND PRACTICE OF CHRONIC HEART FAILURE PATIENTS AFTER HEALTH EDUCATION IN HOP LUC GENERAL HOSPITAL THANH HOA PROVINCE

Abstract

Objective: To evaluate changes in the self-care knowledge and practice of patients with chronic heart failure after a health educational program in Hop Luc general hospital Thanh Hoa province in 2020. Method: A before and after research design was conducted in one group of 86 patients with chronic heart failure managed by Hop Luc General Hospital from December, 2019 to August, 2020. Results: In terms of knowledge before intervention, the mean score was 10.0 ± 2.89 points out of the total score of 22, after one week intervention there was a clear improvement in the average score of knowledge with 19.6. ± 3.01 and maintained at a high level after one month intervention reached 18.6 ± 4.00 out of the total score of 22; the differences were statistically significant with p < 0.001. In terms of practice, the mean score of self-care practice of patients with chronic heart failure out of the total score of 100 based on three domains as Maintenance Care; Care Management; Self-care Confidence at 3 points of time before intervention, 1 week after intervention and 1 month after intervention, respectively were: 35.1 ± 17.5 points, 54.9 ± 12.4 points and 57.6 ± 12 respectively , 2 points; 47.2 ± 14.63 points, 64.5 ± 13.3 points and 68.4 ± 13.4 points; 41.3 ± 15.39 points, 57.6 ± 15.2 and 62.5 ± 16.6 points (p values of 0.01). Conclusion: The health educational program implemented by nurses in this study improved significantly the self-care knowledge and practice of patients with chronic heart failure therefore, this work should be regularly delivered for patients with chronic heart failure.
