Assessment of the knowledge and practice about hypertension self-care management among patients treated at Hung Vuong general Hospital in 2023

Abstract

Objective: To assess the knowledge and practice on hypertension self-care management among patients being treated at Hung Vuong General Hospital in 2023. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive research was conducted on 150 hypertensive internal patients at Hung Vuong General Hospital from January to June, 2023, using a random sampling method. Hypertension self-care management profile tool used to collect the data in SPSS 20. Results: The average age was 55, age group greater than 60 account for 32,6%. Patients had commobidites accompanied are diabetes mellitus (41,3%) and heart failure (25,3%). The BMI (> 23) accounted for 49,3% and 62% of patients had hypertension management book. Knowledge: patients understood correctly definition of hypertension (56%), cause (50%) and consequense (74%). Practice: correct blood pressure measurement (73,3%), appropriate medication (66,7%), checking information about salt and fat content (43%) and doing habit exercise. The total score of practice and knowledge are 21,3% and 51,3%, respectively. Conclusion: The patient’s knowledge and practice of hypertension self-care management are not achieved as expected. Healthcare providers should educate and train patients on hypertension management at home.
