Application of the node-location model to assess the synchronization between transportation infrastructure and residential development projects in Ho Chi Minh City

Abstract

The relationship between transportation systems and population growth has been widely studied globally. As urbanization accelerates, population growth leads to increased demand for housing, transportation, land use, and other essential services. A well-developed transportation network facilitates urban expansion and enhances residents’ access to utilities. To ensure stable and sustainable urban development, maintaining a balance between transportation infrastructure and housing projects is crucial. However, assessing this balance presents a significant challenge for urban researchers. This paper provides an overview of the Node-Place model, proposing its application to evaluate the synchronization between transportation infrastructure and housing development projects in Ho Chi Minh City. Based on the application of the Node-Place model, the authors have made a number of findings: (1) The existing central area (TTHH) and the existing inner city (NTHH) are located at the upper edge of the equilibrium area, showing relatively good transport infrastructure but lower housing development; (2) The suburban district area (NgT) is located at the center of the equilibrium area, showing harmonious development between transport and housing; and (3) the developed inner city area (NTPT) is identified as being in the “tension” zone of the model, showing strong housing development but inadequate transport infrastructure. By applying this model, the paper suggests strategies to achieve integrated urban development, ensuring that both infrastructure and housing projects are balanced to support the city’s growth.
