An investigation of Hoa Loc mango cultivation and its economic performance in Hau Giang Province

Abstract

This study attempted to investigate the cultivation characteristics and financial efficiency of Hoa Loc mango growers in Hau Giang Province. The survey was conducted in the Chau Thanh A district of the province. Data used for this study were collected from 92 mango growers through oral interviews. The financial efficiency of mango cultivation was estimated through the profit-cost ratio. Findings showed that mango growers intensively produced fruits (60% of mango growers producing fruit year-round or two seasons a year) and were likely to abuse agrochemicals. Results from the regression model demonstrated that the household head’s schooling year, the farm-gate price for mango, and the grower producing mango fruit with one season a year had a significantly positive impacted on the financial efficiency of mango cultivation. In contrast, the land area of mango cultivation and variable costs of production had remarkably negative impacts on financial efficiency.
