Study on rip currents and rip forecast system to enhance swimmer safety in Bai Sau beach, Vung Tau city
Abstract
Bai Sau beach in Vung Tau is well known by both domestic and international tourists for its beauty,
long sunny days. Sea swimming and beach bathing are amongst most favorite activities for tourists once
coming here; however, it has also known to be an unsafe beach for swimmer due to regularly
occurrence of rip currents. Despite of big efforts in rescuing and a high attention of the local
government, incidents still have happened unfortunately. This paper presents some first findings from a
research on the local rip currents, its characteristics and pattern and a pilot application of rip currents
forecast system, which relies on monitoring cameras and optical flow detection techniques. Research
result has been supported the rescue team in monitoring the rips and enhancing safety for swimmer.
