Vulnerability and measures of climate change response implementing by farmers of Trung Ngai commune, Vung Liem district, Vinh Long province

Abstract

The surveyed results in Trung Ngai commune show that the extreme weather phenomena due to climate change affected on  agriculture, fisheries, water supply and sanitation. To respond and adapt to climate change, the farmers of Trung Ngai commune have been and will apply measures to convert plant varieties, crop suitable for saline environment, including transfer of rice growth to cyperus; coconut instead of other fruit trees; land elevation for the tree plantation; growing vegetables on rice cultivation land, where there is water shortage in the dry season; converting 3 rice crops into 2 rice crops and 1 vegetable crop; rotational crop varieties suited to the characteristics of water and weather periods of the year. In addition, farmers have applied the measures of conversion of the fish species to adapt the saline water environment; solidifying the houses; elevation of house’s floors; limitation of building houses on the rivers; improving the irrigation systems; enhancing the weather forecasting and communication for agriculture and life. Besides, the people should apply the measures for environmental sanitation conditions improvement such as saving and efficient use of clean water souces; additional investment of domestic water supply stations; limitation of the plant protection product’s use in the agriculture production; use of bio-pesticides; treatment of domestic and production waste waters before discharging into the environment; strengthening the management and handling of solid and  hazardous wastes.
