Abstract

The rural area at Mekong delta provinces is known as a high diversity of fauna, river/canal system. There are a large number of components such as garden, pond, livestock farm, rice field,… in each household, and there is also a workshop at household where craft processes are taken place. All these components could take place in waste treatment, but this potential is not fully evaluated, therefore, the purpose of this study is to evaluate the role of components in the natural ecosystem at the households in pollution prevention and treatment as well as to seek for the chances to reduce investment and operation costs of waste treatment system. The research results showed that the existing ecosystem at the households (in 5 typical types of craft villages) is capable in treating the organic compounds at capacity of 13 up to 100%. Having this efficiency, the existing ecosystem at the household could take part in setting up a model for integrated pollution prevention and control (IPPC model) at the craft villages in rural areas in Mekong delta.
