Abstract

Can Tho city is on track to economic - social development with the goal of building Can Tho to become an industrial city and trade center of the Mekong Delta. With that growth rate, Can Tho city has to face environmental problems, especially for air pollution. Besides, economic - social development, the environmental protection issues were not paid attention by local managers. It leads to environmental pollution that has negative impacts on life quality of citizens. The air quality monitoring network was outdated, missing equipment, personnel and finance. Therefore, it couldn’t reflect the overall picture of air quality in socio – economic development stages. Through the combined 03 scientific basis for environmental network designed by Circular 28/2011-TT/BTNMT of MONRE, the Guidance of the US Environmental Protection Agency (US-EPA) and the Environmental Protection Agency of the European Union (EEA-EU), this research has planned a scientific and practical air quality monitoring system. And we aslo monitored of super fine particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5) in 5 locations of the new air monitoring network for traffic, industrial and household activites sources. The new air quality monitoring is divided for 3 stages: 2015 - 2016, 2017 – 2020 and further 2020 with locations, parameters, frequency of observation consistent with the current state of development of the city and the planning of new developments in the future. Based on the results of monitoring of and comparing with National technical standards for ambient air quality (QCVN05:2013/BTNMT) of MONRE and World Health Organization standards, the air quality of Can Tho city is mainly being polluted from traffic and industrial sources.
