Abstract

Urena lobata, one of the traditional medicine, is used to treat inflammation, arthritis or improve lipid profiles in liver and blood. There also has been a lot of studies in the world about its potential biological activities. Interestingly, root extract usually has  higher biological activities than the whole plant or other parts. Therefore, applying several modern biotechnology techniques could help to initially obtain this potential resource. In this research, we demonstrated the application of some growth factors which can increase the biomass of hairy root such as: inoculum density, light condition, medium and proportion of marco-nutrient. The results showed that when hairy roots were cultured at the inoculum density of 10 g/L FW, under illumination at 3000 lux, WPM medium supplemented 4 % sucrose were more suitable for the growth of hairy root. At the same time, when all these factors were put fogther the haing root grouthr was improved. The fresh weight (FW) and dry weight (DW) increased 2.01-fold and 1.94-fold, respectively.
