Abstract

Nowadays, many translation services are offered by laypeople who are very good at foreign language skills but have not had any professional translation training. In translational research, it is agreed that much still needs to be done in order to achieve a high level of translation quality in accordance with the recommendations of CIUTI (Conférence Internationale Permanente d'Instituts Universitaires de Traducteurs et Interprètes) and ITI (Institute of Translating and Interpreting) in the United Kingdom.

On the basis of an examination of curricula and syllabuses in professional translator training at selected educational institutions in German-speaking countries, the following questions are discussed: What training objectives are being pursued? What are the most important training contents and why? What can be learned for translator training in Vietnam in general and at VNU University of Languages and International Studies in particular?
