Abstract

In the role of a common language of the ethnic groups in Vietnam, since thousands of years, in spite of how the historical setting is, Vietnamese has always been kept and developed by Vietnamese people. However, not until the leadership of the party and the independence of the country (1945) did it really function as the national language and was it essential in the strategic perspectives “to keep the purity of Vietnamese”, “to protect, develop and modernize Vietnamese”.The paper offers a systematic review of the orientation and policy of the Party and the State on Vietnamese as well as the process of implementing them. Simultaneously, on the basis of the new features of the Vietnamese context in particular and the linguistic context in Vietnam in general, the paper sets up some issues of policy and its implementation for the Vietnamese language today.
