QUOTATIONS USED IN COMMENTARIES ON VIETNAMESE PRINTED NEWSPAPERS

Abstract

An article often includes 2 kinds of statements: ones are written down by the writer himself and the others are quoted from different favorite people in order to serve the writer’s own purposes. In spite of what articles’ style is, quotations are one of the most specific kind of newspaper writing, and they play an important role in information providing and persuading readers. The quotation, which is placed in different contexts, will have different meanings and the meanings will be used for the writer’s different aims. Like other journalistic texts, commentaries include 2 kinds of information quotations: direct and indirect ones. Verbs are often used in quotations to show the origins of those quotations. On Vietnamese printed newspaper, indirect quotations used in commentaries have a higher rate than direct ones. This disproportion occurs because the writer really wants to make their own comments more objective. This is aimed at drawing readers’ attention and orienting them in a tactful way.
