INVESTIGATING THE METRIC STRUCTURES OF “SIX- EIGHT” LINES IN THE TALE OF KIEU

Abstract

: This paper is aimed at presenting more details in the concepts as poetic ‘metre/meter’, ‘foot’, ‘metric structure’ and the differences between meter and rhythm, etc. in the versification. The main objective of the paper is to further investigate the metrical structures of first 500 lines "six - eight" of The Tale of Kieu: how are the combinations of ‘flat’ tones and ‘sharp’ ones in each line “six” or “eight” syllables. The authors of this paper try to point out how Nguyen Du, the great poet of Vietnam, made use of the metrical structures in each line of "six" or "eight" syllables and what typical metrical structures that the poet preferred using in his famous poetry art.
