STRATEGIES FOR TRANSLATING UTTERENCES WITH CONVERSATIONAL IMPLICATURE FROM ENGLISH INTO VIETNAMESE (Based on utterances extracted from short stories by Earnest Hemingway)

Abstract

Translation is considered as a process of communication. To a certain extent, a translation must be of equivalences among which form - based, meaning - based and function - based equivalences are the most popular. To make a translation to its required equivalence is not easy. Translating implicit meaning is even more difficult. This article investigated the utterences with conversational implicature (CI) extracted from works of Earnest Hemingway to find out the strategies the translators used to translate them from English into Vietnamese. The research shows that there are three main strategies: translation with conserved CI, translation with adapted CI and translation with no CI. Which strategy is chosen depends on each utterence to be translated in order to make the utterence most naturally equivalent.
