AVOIDING LEXICAL REPETITIONS IN STUDENTS'ESSAY WRITING AT DONG THAP UNIVERSITY
Abstract
The article discusses different devices of avoiding unwanted repetitions in English essay writings by EFL learners at Dong Thap University while still assuring cohesive requirements. In addition to personal pronouns as very o ften seen in their essay - writing term papers, other devices should be attentively noted and regularly practiced by the students under the teacher’s sound guidance. These include the uses of the binary pair “the former …, the latter”, synonyms, near - synonyms, super - ordinates, zero - objects, ellipsis, omissions, compound - complex sentences, nominalizations and phrasalizations.
