Epistemic markers with negative politeness strategies in dialogues in English and Vietnamese
Abstract
This article addresses the role of the epistemic markers in the negative politeness strategies in dialogues in English and Vietnamese. From the contrastive analysis of data collected from dialogue extracts in novels, short stories, the article found that English and Vietaamese have at their disposal a wide range of epistemic markers for the use of negative politeness strategies and share some similarities and differences in terms of syntactic, semantic and pragmatic features
