Development and Coordination of Market for Agricultural Products: Theory and Application in Vietnam

Abstract

The present paper reviews the four empirical approaches of market study for agricultural products based on  market development process, market function, institution, and competitiveness. These approaches are applied to discus and imply for the three case studies of agricultural products in Vietnam: safe vegetables commodity, mountainous agricultural products (especially maize) and pig commodity. The paper shows that agricultural products market in Vietnam is ranked between the primitive and emerging stage of market development process; vertical and horizontal coordinations have been developed in the market but market exchanges based mainly on informal transactions as well as existing "opportunistic"behavior and inequality in the market for agricultural products. Besides, the formal market actors in marketing channels, the governmental organizations should to be developed as  formal ones to provide public goods to the market effectively
