Abstract

Molecular interaction in organically modified clay and PVC/clay composite were evaluated by means of the Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscope (FTIR). Thermal stability of the composite was determined by using a thermogravimetry and its dimensional stability was determined by a thermomechanical analysis. The FTIR data reveals hydrogen bond and ionic bond interaction between functional end groups of organic modifier and surface oxygen of interlayer clay sheet lying in the organically modified clay. Apart from that the hydrogen bond formation between intercalated polymer with organic modifier and surface oxygen of clay sheet locating in the interlayer clay gallery in the polymer clay composite also was observed. The effect of these interactions on thermal stability and the dimensional stability of the composite were also discussed.
