SELECTING LOCATION AND NUMBER OF SURGE ARRESTERS FOR IMPROVEMENT THE LIGHTNING PERFORMANCE OF 220KV TRANSMISSION LINES

Abstract

Determining the location and number of surge arrester installed on the transmission line to achieve the best flashover rate is always an important issue, which is important in minimizing the incident due to lightning on transmission lines. This paper mentions a solution choice of location and number of surge arrester installed on the transmission line. Some elements such as the lightning current threshold of each tower position, the footing resistance, the span and the altitude of the tower are considered. Calculation results were based on the electrogeometric model (EGM) and Electromagnetic Transients Program EMTP. Research and simulation results are made with the 220 kV transmission line of Son Dong branch. These results provide the basis for reference, suggestion for the location selection, the best number of surge arrester to install for transmission lines
