Application of GIS technology and remote sensing in assessing the expansion of inaccessible artificial islands in Spratly islands, Vietnam
Abstract
Nowadays, GIS and remote sensing technology have been applied in many fields of socioeconomic sector, security and defense, especially sea and islands sovereignty. In recent years, nations around Bien Dong, especially China, have been constantly developing and expanding illegal artificial islands violating Vietnam sovereignty. Therefore, the application of GIS and remote sensing technology using multi-resolution and multi-temperal data sources has become an effective support tool to monitor the changes of artificial islands which are difficult to access in Vietnam Spratly Islands. This paper develops a process to assess the expansion of inaccessibly artificial island in Vietnam Spratly Islands using multi-dimensional remote sensing data sources combining with GIS processing and analysis.
