08. Using Index-base Built-up Index (IBI) from multi-temporal remote sensing data to monitor the urbanization of Nha Trang city in Vietnam

Abstract

The process of urbanization in big cities (i.e. Nha Trang) is happening very quickly. Spatial expansion of urban land should be controlled and oriented in accordance with the city's planning and development trends. This study uses Built-up Index extracted from Landsat period 2004 - 2018 to monitor urbanization rate of the mainland in Nha Trang. The results showed that there was a significant increase of construction land in Nha Trang city from 2004 to 2018. Urbanization was not only displayed by population growth, but also showed via spatial expansion, the tendency to expand from East to West, along traffic routes and rivers. The strongest period for urbanization of Nha Trang city was 2011 - 2018, more 7 times higher than that of period 2004 - 2011.
