DERIVATIVE METHOD IN KOREAN AND AFFIX-BASED WORD STRUCTURE METHOD IN VIETNAMESE

  • Hoàng Thị Yến

Abstract

The use of affixes to form words is called derivation. This is a powerful way of word formation in adhesive languages like Korean. While prefixes only have the function of forming words, suffixes can also change the word type of the word that precedes it. In Vietnamese as well as in other isolated languages, the method of using affixes to form words has only a secondary position and is quite faint compared to other methods of word formation. This is because of stagnation and its limited sphere of influence. Therefore, author Hoang Van Hanh (1991) only considers it a method of word formation based on “elements like affixes”. The Chinese elements acting as affixes are striking similarities in the affixbased word structure method of Korean and Vietnamese.
