Abstract

Reliability of control and protection system in power system was normaly evaluated basedOJ the experience and feeling before. It was mostly designed without reliability mathematicsmodels and methods. Control and protection system are sometimes complex, incorporating manydifferent equipment groups, often at widely seperated places, and often requiring high speedcommunications for proper operation. The inherent reliability of such complex system is aconcern of the design and management engineer and presents a significant analytical problem.This paper describes the use of fault tree analysis as one method of analyzing the reliability ofthese complex system. It also includes examples that illustrate practical applications of fault treeanalysis to compare the relative reliability of system configulations.
