Abstract
In the context of globalization and international integration, English plays a crucial role as an essential communication tool in both academic and professional environments. For first-year students, developing communication skills right from the first year of university is critical to their ability to adapt, study effectively and integrate into society. This study aims to clarify the contribution of English speaking skills to the development of communication skills for first-year students. Based on document analysis and a survey of 120 first-year students at Quang Ninh University of Industry, the results indicate that speaking skills have a strong impact on key aspects of communication competence, including: confidence in communication, the ability to organize and express ideas, linguistic reflexes, the ability to communicate in real-life situations and intercultural communication skills. Accordingly, several measures to enhance the effectiveness of teaching speaking skills are proposed, with the goal of fostering comprehensive communication skills for development. These recommendations are intended for reference and potential application by instructors in the Department of Foreign Languages at Quảng Ninh University of Industry in their teaching practices.
