Plant characteristics and chemical composition of Sargassum henslowianum J.agardh collected in Vinh Linh, Quang Tri
Abstract
Sargassum is known to possess many important biological activities, including anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, antibacterial, anticancer, and antioxidant properties [1]. Data ranging from botanical characteristics to the chemical composition of Sargassum henslowianum J.Agardh, collected from Vinh Linh, Quang Tri, provide a foundation for future studies on the potential applications of this species. Fresh samples were collected and thoroughly described in terms of morphology and anatomical structure. The main chemical constituents of the studied samples were also investigated and evaluated. The study identified the external morphological features, as well as the stem and leaf microanatomy of Sargassum henslowianum. It also confirmed the presence of several compound groups, including polysaccharides, saponins, tannins, amino acids, proteins, reducing sugars, lipids, iodine, and sterols. Furthermore, the iodine and lipid contents were quantified at 0.1123% and 1.46% of dry weight, respectively.
