Abstract

The article analyzes income-based social stratification in the South from 2006 to 2018, using four data sets from the 2006, 2010, 2014 and 2018 population living standards surveys. The results show that, on average, per capita income in the South increased significantly after 12 years. However, there is uneven growth among income groups, in which the upper and upper middle-income groups increase quite quickly while the lower middle-income groups increase more slowly. Although the average income of different residential groups has increased rapidly, the gap between the rich and the poor, between urban and rural areas and between economic sub-regions has not shown any sign of decreasing. The socio-economic conditions of the family and the personal resources of the household head have a great influence on the income of the residential groups. In which, education, occupational class and economic sub-region are the three factors that have the strongest impact on the income of Southern residents.
