Abstract

The objective of this study aimed at investigating the status of pig production and farm
hygiene application, determining the risk factors associated with the prevalence of Porcine
Epidemic Diarrhea (PED) virus in the small scale pig household farms in Soc Son district in
2016. The studied results showed that there were 55.1% of the pig households used industrial
feed, 100% of pig households used drill-well water for raising pig and 67 % of households daily
cleaned pig pens. However, there were 24% of pig households discharging the un-treated
wastewater and wastes directly into common environment; 91% of the pig households added
antibiotics into the pig feed; 56.8% of the pig households did not provide mineral premix and
vitamins for pigs and 100% of pig households did not have PED vaccine. The prevalence of
PED virus from the diarrheal pig feces samples was 6.6% (8/121). The associated factors
might play the important role in increasing the risk of diarrhea from 2.47 to 5.37 times (p<0.05),
included vitamins and minerals were not added into the pig diets; the pig pens were not cleaned
and disinfected periodically; high stocking density of pigs was applied in the small pens
