Abstract

The surgical treatment for canine pyometra was carried out in the Veterinary clinic of Can Tho
University from August 2020 to December 2020. The clinical and subclinical diagnosis results
indicated that there were 60/896 bitches suffered from pyometra during the first time brought
to the above clinic for diagnosis and treatment, accounting for 6.70%. The pyometra symptoms
included: Vaginal inflammation discharged white, cloudy, green or yellowish-brown mucus, with
a strong fishy odor (76.67%); the abdomen was swelled due to the size of uterus increasing
(76.67%); the dogs were lethargic, anorexia but drank plenty of water (75%); sedentism, tummy
(73.33%). The rate of open pyometra (75%) was higher than closed pyometra (25%). The
success of surgical treatment was rather high (95%). The time of wound healing depended on
the age of dogs, most of which focused on the day 5th -7th after surgery; the dogs ≤ 2 years old
presented shorter wound healing time than the dogs >4 years old.
